Which Flourish logo option do you prefer?

by Fiona Humberstone on January 7, 2010 · 28 comments

Snow or no snow, in the Flourish offices we’ve been beavering away for the past few months developing the Flourish brand. And as I’ve blogged about before, being Creative Director, client and designer has been more than a little challenging for all of us. And so after much debate and U-turning and heartache, we present to you our three (almost finished) logo options.

We’d really appreciate a bit of objective input on this. Woods and trees spring to mind at the moment!

So what do you think?

Option One:

Option Two:

Option Three:

Our brief is creativity, strength, clarity, approachability, warmth, wit and humour. Obviously a lot is going to depend on what we put around the logos too, so I shall upload some sample stationery very soon to go with them. As ever, I really appreciate all your comments…

You can vote on the logos using our twitter poll, or just leave me your comments below…

I like option #1 with one comment. Do not like grass in text. It gives the eye too much to absorb. #2 is good but I like the colors in #1

Good luck!

Thank you Gail, yes, I agree the grass can be distracting. But we wanted *something* that was more than just a plain font. Interestingly I prefered option 2 without the grass but no one else does it seems!

Keep the votes and comments coming. It’s *very* constructive and actually quite confidence boosting too!

I prefer Option 2 without the grass. I have a client with a fringe as part of their logo and from a distance it just looks dirty! I definitely agree that it is just something else for the eye and takes away from the impact of the word for me. But like Gail, I actually prefer the colours of Option 1 – sorry about that!

I like the first one, the grass is eye-catching. As as design based company you want something a bit extra than just text!
If you feel the grass is TOO much, take out a few strands?
Option one gets my vote! :)

My favourite is option 2, i like the simplicity of the logo. would work well in all medias and provide clarity when reproducing for lower resolution photoshop requirements (favicons/gifs/facebook etc)
Colourwise…ooohhhh thats more of a thinker… if my life depended on it…hummm… come on finnie be decisive… I like the colours from idea 1 (only just! the Greens are pretty too)
hope this helps x

All are quite different but highlight what is ultimately good about the 1st image which seems to work as the grasses etc seem to help paint a picture of the brand name itself otherwise the word “flourish” standing on its own there isnt doing a lot, but the leafy stuff does the trick and makes it come together, colours are strong too and seem to work for me…you might want to stick a small insect, a butterfly or even a bird or a couple of raindrops somewhere in or on it…but may detract but might re-inforce more also, not sure…
Happy New Year by the way to all at Flourish!
Nick

yes, I think we should remove a couple of strands if it is to be the winner. Thanks Becky.

8 Fiona Humberstone January 7, 2010 at 4:03 pm

very helpful. Thanks Rob. I love the impact of the purples. But I love the shape of option 3. I wonder if everyone’s going for option one because of the colour???

9 Fiona Humberstone January 7, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Nick for an accountant you’re incredibly creative ;-) Thank you and happy new year to you

10 Elizabeth Cairns January 7, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Hi Fi,
I think i’d have to go for option 1 with or without the grass, it looks great large like this but might lose impact with the grass when smaller, hard to tell.
I really like option 3 hand written as it reminds me more of you and your personal style, but not sure I like the font that Creative studios is in below it which I think is what puts me off it, also I like the two colours of the others so maybe just orange is a bit plain.

ooo choices choices what a toughy
Good luck with it
Eli

p.s Nicks comment about the insect or bird is a great idea too!

12 Pamela Wallin January 7, 2010 at 4:16 pm

I would say Option 1, with leaves, but maybe fewer of them. The logo without it doesn’t say anything to me and looks rather boring. Love colour of option 1, this logo is vibrant, fresh and promotes the idea of a growing business. Love it.

13 Kirsty Murray January 7, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I agree with Becky. Option one is definitely a winner for me, but maybe take down the grass slightly. Like the colours, very strong, but what about a nice darker, fresher green combo as well? I like the existing green option but feel it could be a bit punchier. Hope all these opinions help!

Hi Fiona,

The logo needs more work from what I can see but I’d look at it the other way and refine the brief.

It’s impossible to satisfy all the criteria of your brief (creativity, strength, clarity, approachability, warmth, wit and humour) which is probably why you’re finding hard.

Distil the brief to the three most important values and start again. Give yourselves a fighting chance…

None of the options satisfy the creative element which is core to your business, I’d also choose clarity as that’s what you try and offer your clients and their prospective customers and approachability because it reflects you as a person and as a business you have to listen to your clients needs.

Logo core values (Revised)
1. creativity,
2. clarity
3. approachability

Hope it helps, mail/tweet me if you want to chat.

thank you Kirsty and lovely to hear from you!

16 Fiona Humberstone January 7, 2010 at 4:44 pm

thanks Neville. You’ve raised some good points. Thank you

17 lydia January 7, 2010 at 5:03 pm

i agree with the suggestion to try a punchier green.
re: leaves in fewer places, what about just in the “i”? have you looked at it how it comes out in smaller sizes?
the orange font is not legible enough, _especially_ if clarity is a core value!

18 Helen Reigate January 7, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Option 2 a definate, option 3 reminds me of a certain card shop logo, colours making it even more so!!! Option 2 is clean cut and good colours

19 Becky January 7, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Yeah I think if you took out a few strands, it would look more simple, love the leaves/grass idea being in there though as it puts more of a visual into the meaning of the word ‘flourish’.
Agree totally with the ’small insect, a butterfly or even a bird or a couple of raindrops somewhere in or on it’ as Nick suggested!
We are a helpful bunch aren’t we! :)
Tough choice though!

Like the GREEN NO GRASS as it is uplifting, fresh and zesty!!!! Purple and Pink works but looks a little Ruby Wax for me. The Purple will of course range from Burgundy to Brown depending on printer and processes where the GREEN/MUSTARD will be more forgiving when it comes to tolerances :) ) The GREEN/MUSTARD works well against Black or White so extremes are covered – good effort and love the research via Twitter etc

Hi

don’t have a lot of time, i preferred the ones we looked at over dinner (was it the wine?) i thought they were more creative and unique. of the 3 i prefer 2- its simple and strong. no 3 raises the problem again of it looking like flour-ish, and i don’t think it meets your brief. making the “i” a different colour makes me think of a very personalised service, its all about me- but that isn’t something you are saying is a value. and i don’t get wit or humour from any of them (i’m not sure i would have these are core values, but agree you may want that personal approach to come through)

xx

Tricky one! I’ve voted for option 2 as I think the simpler design communicates the (brilliant) name really well & comes across as very strong and clear. I like the ones that fit better with the meaning of flourish as ‘thriving and prospering’ rather than as ‘dramatic gestures’ – number 3 does this for me – as I think this is more motivating as a client. The font of 2 is nice; feels approachable but confident. I also agree it looks like option 2would be more ‘replicable’ (have I made that word up?) across all the different applications.

However, I’m also keen on the colours of option 1 as they feel less obvious than green, more creative and warm somehow. Like the others I agree that it might be worth pursuing a small icon as part of it but I find the fringe a bit distracting and not as clean, clear and contemporary as you would like to be so overall I’d put my vote firmly in the No.2 camp (or actually No 2 with No 1 colours.)

What fun. Good luck with it all!

thank you all. I see why other agencies get other agencies to design their logos for them now! watch this space. will be taking all your comments on board for the final push. The logo isn’t there yet. But lots of the elements are: colour palette. Look and feel of the blog and we have some ideas for the marketing literature and stationery which is all hanging together nicely so we WILL get there in time for the launch. And thank you again for your help.

Hi Fiona

One is the definite favourite – probably because I like your purple shoes – the colour seems right for you! The grass i’m not so sure on – but it probably distracts with you having it without the grass at the top of the page and I immediately liked that one. The green just seems a bit bland. I don’t like orange much as a colour so that’s why i’m struggling with that one – how would that style look in the purple tones?

25 Fiona January 8, 2010 at 10:11 am

Thanks Helen. Can’t believe I missed the Clinton’s similarity!!! urgh!

We’re back to the drawing board and looking forward to cracking this v. soon. Will keep you updated with the progress

I don’t know who Gail Lewis is but I completely agree with her from the logos presented here! Saying that, some ‘toned down’ grass may work well. May even be worth a try in just the ‘i’ as opposed to all the letters as I understand how important it is for you to do more than just have plain font. I love the colours in option 1 – they are really strong. Good luck!

27 Clare Yarwood-White January 8, 2010 at 2:17 pm

I like #1 best. I do like the grass – unusual and I like the growth/flourish connotations – I think it works really well and gives obvious meaning to the name. Also really like the colours of #1.

Not so keen on #2 in comparison. Colours feel a bit “juice bar”.

Don’t like #3. Bit funky for me, but maybe I’m just old fashioned (but am I your target market, that’s the question!!!) Good luck deciding.
